The Vatican packs several closures into a few winter weeks, so it pays to map them before you book. In 2026 the Museums are closed on 8 December (the Immaculate Conception), 25 and 26 December (Christmas Day and the feast of St Stephen), 1 January (Mary, Mother of God) and 6 January (the Epiphany). The Sistine Chapel is closed on each of those days too.
Which days stay open
Every other date in this stretch runs on the normal schedule, Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 20:00 with last entry at 18:00. The days between Christmas and New Year are generally open, and they are among the busiest of the whole year, since much of Europe is on holiday and heading for the Sistine Chapel. Late-December tickets go early, so treat them the way you would a summer weekend.
Watch the half-days
Two dates need a second look. 24 December and 31 December often run reduced hours and close earlier than usual so staff can prepare for the evening. The exact cut-off shifts from year to year, so read the time printed on your ticket rather than assuming a full day. If you want the galleries at their quietest on those two dates, take the first entry slot.
A good time to come

Are the Vatican Museums open on Christmas Day?
No. The Museums are closed on 25 December, and they stay closed the following day, 26 December, for the feast of St Stephen. The Sistine Chapel is shut on both. The nearest open days are 24 December, which may run shorter hours, and 27 December.
Are they open on 26 December?
No. 26 December is a public holiday in Italy (Santo Stefano) and the Vatican Museums are closed, just as on Christmas Day. Plan to visit from 27 December onward, and book ahead because those first days back are busy.
Are the Vatican Museums open on New Year's Day?
No. The Museums close on 1 January for the feast of Mary, Mother of God. They reopen on 2 January on the usual Monday to Saturday schedule. Keep in mind that 6 January, the Epiphany, is another closure a few days later.
Are they open on 8 December?
No. 8 December is the Immaculate Conception, a holy day the Vatican observes, so the Museums are closed. It lands in early December when the city is already filling with Christmas visitors, so reserve the surrounding open days in advance.
