In 2026 Easter Sunday falls on 5 April. The Vatican Museums close on Sundays as a rule, so Easter Sunday is a closed day like any other Sunday, and the free last-Sunday opening does not apply to it. The Museums are also closed on Easter Monday, 6 April, a public holiday across Italy. Those are the two dates to keep off your itinerary.
Holy Week: open, but heaving
The days leading up to Easter, known as Holy Week, are a different story. The Museums stay open on their usual Monday to Saturday hours, 08:00 to 20:00 with last entry at 18:00, so Good Friday and Holy Saturday are working days inside the galleries. The catch is the crowds. Rome fills with pilgrims, and St Peter's hosts major papal ceremonies through the week that pull enormous numbers into the area around the basilica and the square.
How to time it
If your trip lands in this window, book a timed ticket well ahead and take the earliest entry slot you can. Getting in at 08:00 buys you a couple of quieter hours before the day-trippers arrive and before nearby ceremonies let out. Allow extra time to reach the entrance, because police close roads around the Vatican when large events are on.
A note on the free Sunday
The Vatican's free last-Sunday opening runs on the final Sunday of most months. In any year when that date coincides with Easter Sunday, the free opening does not go ahead. Check the full opening hours and read up on the best time to visit before you fix your dates.
Plan around it:Easter Monday, 6 April 2026 is closed, Easter Sunday (5 April) is a normal Sunday closure, and Holy Week is one of the busiest stretches of the year. Check the opening hours and book a timed ticket for an open day early.
