What summer is actually like
July and August bring the heaviest crowds and the highest temperatures of the year. Rome sits in the low-to-mid thirties Celsius through the middle of the day, and the Museums fill to their limit soon after opening. The galleries were built long before air conditioning, and in the busiest stretches, like the corridor leading to the Sistine Chapel, the air barely moves. Add a few thousand people and it turns close and sticky fast.
The two moves that work
There are two reliable ways to stay ahead of the heat and the queues. The first is the 08:00 opening slot: book the earliest timed entry, be at the door before it opens, and walk the route while the building is still cool and half empty. The second is a Friday night opening, offered on selected evenings from April to October, when the sun is down and the crowd is capped. Either one beats arriving at midday in August, which is the worst of both worlds.
Practical summer notes
Bring water. There are fountains inside where you can refill, but the walk is long, roughly 7 km one way, and you will want it. The dress code holds in any weather: shoulders and knees covered, no exception for heat, so pack a light layer rather than counting on a vest and shorts getting you through the door. The Museums also close on 14 and 15 August for the Ferragosto holiday, so keep those two dates off your itinerary.
One more warning about the free last Sunday. It is a hard visit in any month, and in summer it is brutal: no booking, no timed entry, and a long wait in full sun.
