Profession of Faith

The Symbol is the profession of faith. The Symbol of faith identifies the baptized person. It bears the essential elements of faith; it says for a believer what a believer believes and would be willing to affirm at his or her baptism once and for all time to share the same confession with the whole Christian community throughout its life.

Many different professions of faith show aspects of the great richness of experience of meeting Christ. In the history of the manifold Christian traditions, two creeds have emerged that have won promi- nent recognition in the life of the Church: the Apostles' Creed developed in Rome for baptism and the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, first formulated in 325, at the Council of Nicaea in what is now Iznik, Turkey, and cre- ated further at the Council of Constantinople in 381.

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved, for it is with the heart that one believes and is justified, and it is with the mouth that one confesses and is saved," (Romans 10:9-10). St. Paul’s passage brings out the fact that the declaration of the mystery of faith requires a profound change not only in speech but above all in one’s approach to God, oneself, and the world. “Profession of the Creed in faith enters me into communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and with the whole Church as it hands on the faith to me and in which I believe”.
