Pope Leo XIV's Lenten and Easter Engagements

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to conduct pastoral visits to five parishes in Rome, participate in the Lenten Spiritual Exercises at the Vatican alongside the Roman Curia, and officiate the Easter ceremonies at both St. Peter’s Basilica and St. John Lateran.

The Bishop of Rome is set to demonstrate his solidarity with the faithful of his Diocese through a series of pastoral visits to five Roman parishes, which are planned to take place from Sunday, February 15, to Sunday, March 15. The Pope's visits predominantly occur in the peripheral regions of the capital and align with his engagement in the Lenten Spiritual Exercises as well as the Easter ceremonies.

Pastoral Visits to Five Roman Parishes

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit five parishes in Rome in observance of the Lenten season. Visits to the parish on five designated Sundays. As stated in the calendar released on February 3 by the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations, the Pope's visits to parishes are scheduled for Sunday afternoons, featuring a Eucharistic celebration that will be presided over at 5:00 p.m.

On February 22, he is scheduled to visit the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Castro Pretorio, located near Termini Station, in the morning, with an anticipated arrival time of 9:00 a.m.

The Five Parish Appointments

The initial appointment is scheduled for February 15 at the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace located in Ostia Lido. On March 1, he is set to visit the Parish of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ located in the Alessandrino district; on March 8, he will attend the Parish of Our Lady of the Presentation in the Torrevecchia district; and on March 15, he is scheduled to be at the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ponte Mammolo.

Spiritual Retreats with the Curia

On February 18, the Pope will commence Lent with an afternoon Mass at the Basilica of Saint Sabina, located on the Aventine Hill. This event will be preceded by the Statio and a penitential procession that will depart from the adjacent church of Saint Anselm.

Pope Leo is set to participate in the annual Lenten Spiritual Exercises with the Roman Curia, scheduled to be held in the Apostolic Palace from February 22 to February 27.

The Easter Triduum

On the morning of Palm Sunday, March 29, he will officiate at Mass in St. Peter's Square.

The observances of the Easter Triduum are set to commence on Holy Thursday, April 2, with the Chrism Mass taking place in the morning at St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by the evening Mass at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, which serves as the Cathedral for the Bishop of Rome.

On Good Friday, April 3, the Pope is scheduled to lead the liturgical observance of the Passion of the Lord and subsequently participate in the customary Way of the Cross at the Colosseum.

On Holy Saturday, April 4, Pope Leo will officiate Mass with the congregation in St. Peter’s Basilica for the Easter Vigil during the sacred Holy Night, which will take place in the same basilica.

The Easter festivities culminate with the Mass on Easter Sunday, commemorating the Resurrection, held in St. Peter's Square, which is succeeded by the customary “Urbi et Orbi” Blessing delivered from the central Loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.
