Pope Leo XIV Announces World Children's Day 2026

On Wednesday at the Papal Audience, Pope Leo XIV blessed the crowd of children and signed a flag with the World Children's Day logo for the event, which will take place on 25-27 September 2026. “Ciao to my fellow pilgrims…from Italy: When I think today of the children I will meet on Children's Day, I think of the day when I will meet all children,” the Pope said.

Acts of the Apostles received flag from Gaza boy Pope Benedict XVI received the flag from the boy from Gaza, Majd Bernard, age 7, at the ceremony, presented by Father Enzo Fortunato, OFM Conv, president of the Pontifical Committee for World Children's Day (WCD).

A Day of Prayer for Children and Families

As stated in a recent press release from the Committee, "World Children's Day is a day of coming together in prayer to celebrate the love of the community for children and their families around the world". Cardinal Kevin Farrell (Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life) has also affirmed the Church's desire to support children and their families.

A child's ability to develop as an individual depends on his or her ability to understand peace and to appreciate what it means for them to be healthy and peaceful (for example, by taking an active role in their relationships with family, community and the world around them). Children recognise that they need to feel safe and secure in order to develop, and are affected by the tensions and conflicts they experience in their lives (e.g. at home, at school or within their community/society).

In a press release, Cardinal Farrell stated that through the Second World Congress on the Dignity of Childhood, he wants to show a unified spirit of Christianity to all children and their families in the world in order to give them hope and happiness.

The Logo and Its Symbolism

The logo for this year is meant to represent the presentation of a flagship to His Holiness the Pope last Wednesday - i.e. a display of 7 illustrations (footprints) for each of the Earth's continents (7 in total). The press release accompanying the logo states that the "7 footprints illustrate that the actions taken as a child {i.e. simple, uncomplicated, etc.} demonstrate the behaviour of both universal and innocent parents towards their children".

The colours of the world show our cultural diversity and together form an aesthetic balance that inspires all people to appreciate each other, regardless of their country of origin or ethnicity. This can be represented by St Peter's Basilica (using its very architecture as an example) in how it “gives security” and “provides a safe haven” for his followers. The cross at the top also serves as a reminder to individuals of God's unconditional love for every human being.

Building on the Success of the First Edition

The first World Children's Day, celebrated in 2024, witnessed the participation of some 100,000 children from 101 countries.

The Church is committed to listening to, valuing and understanding the views of all young people, who are the foundation of a peaceful spirit, welcoming all and bringing hope for a shared future, through this second edition in 2026, according to media sources.
