Information concerning the program of Pope Leo X's travel plans to Pompeii and Naples on Friday, May 8, 2026 (one year after having been elected pope), has recently been released. The itinerary for visiting Pompei shows that Pope Leo X will be greeted by Church and State officials as he arrives for an 8:50 a.m. meeting at the Church of the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei.

At 08:55 AM, after the start of service, he will have a meeting with the representatives of “Temple of Charity” in Luisa Trapani Hall and with those supporting charity activities at the Shrine and those who receive assistance from various centres.

The Pope is scheduled to ride in his Popemobile around the city at 9:30 a.m., and will arrive at Piazza Bartolo Longo at approximately 9:45 a.m. After he arrives at the square, he will spend one hour adorning the Blessed Sacrament inside the Shrine and will also meet with the sick, elderly, and disabled individuals.

At 10:00 a.m., Pope will pray at the chapel for Saint Bartolo Longo — the founder of the Shrine. He will welcome the bishops in attendance for the event. The priests who serve the Prelature of Pompeii and at the Shrine will welcome the Holy Father at the Chapel of Reconciliation.

Pope Leo XII will hold Mass at Bartolo Longo's Piazza on September 15th at 10:30 am. Many people have confirmed attendance as well as many more who will watch on large screens that will also be placed on the nearby streets. There could be thousands who attend Mass.

At midday, the customary prayer to the Virgin of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii will be conducted.

Cardinal Domenico Battaglia and local authorities will greet the Pope at the Naples international airport when he lands at 3:00 p.m. by helicopter. The Pope will travel on a plane from Rome to Campania after lunch and will arrive at Campania at 3:15 p.m. by helicopter.

The Archdiocese of Naples has organized a celebration whereby all events honor an archdiocesan saint - St. Janarius, who was the patron of St. George and the founder of St. Augustine Cathedral in Naples. In this case, Pope Leo XIV has invited all clergy and/or persons who live in religious profession from throughout the archdiocese to celebrate this event (the “First Session of the 65th Synod on the Statutes for Clergy and Consecrated Life,” which will take place at the Cathedral of Naples).

As outlined in the program, a substantial assembly of children is scheduled to convene in the forecourt of the Cathedral to extend a warm welcome to him.

Upon his arrival, the Holy Father will make a private pilgrimage to the Royal Chapel of the Treasury of Saint Januarius (San Gennaro) for the purpose of privately worshiping the Blessed Sacrament. He will arrive at the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola at 5:20 p.m., where he will meet with the Minims (or Minim Friars) and members of the congregation, accompanied by some civil and ecclesiastical dignitaries. After that, he will give a speech from the Piazza del Plebiscito to the City of Naples.

The final major event of this day will begin at 5:30 PM. The pope (Leo XIV) will speak to and address the citizens of Naples at the piazza (Plaza del Plebiscito).

The ceremony about placing Mary in trust will take place at a church (the Immaculate Conception) and mark the 200th anniversary of the coronation of her image with a papal apostolic blessing from Pope Leo. The image will be taken into the plaza for this event.

Pope Leo XIV will subsequently depart from Piazza del Plebiscito and proceed to Rotonda Diaz, from which he is scheduled to take a helicopter at 6:45 p.m. for his journey back to the Vatican.

Shortly thereafter, at 5:20 p.m., he will visit the Basilica of San Francesco di Paolato greet the community of the Minims, along with several civil and religious authorities.

Addressing the city of Naples in Piazza del Plebiscito

The final major event of the day will begin at 5:30 p.m., when Pope Leo XIV will meet with the people of Naples in Piazza del Plebiscito and will address the city.

At the conclusion of the gathering, there will be an Act of Entrustment to the Virgin Mary before the venerated image of the Immaculate Conception, which will be brought into the square on the occasion of the bicentenary of its coronation, before Pope Leo imparts his Apostolic Blessing.

Pope Leo XIV will then leave Piazza del Plebiscito and travel to Rotonda Diaz, from where he will depart by helicopter at 6:45 p.m. for his return to the Vatican.
